Weather Eye: Temperatures will slowly begin to cool off in county

The warm weather continued Monday with a high of 86 degrees, down 1 degree from Sunday. I’m glad I stuck with my prediction a few days ago of no more 90-degree days the rest of this month. Any way you look at it we have no complaints, even though it is a few degrees above my comfort zone.

Heat relief could be found at the coastal beaches, where low clouds and fog remained for most of the day Sunday and Monday with temperatures in the 60s and breezy north-northwest winds. Some of that marine air will filter in the remaining days this week with a slow cool-off. By Friday and over the weekend we should see highs close to normal, in the 70s.

Computer forecast models indicate a trough of low pressure off our coast for the July Fourth weekend, with weak weather systems skirting by to the north. Some of these will be strong enough to produce light showers or drizzle north of Clark County and along the coast. Of course the timing of these impulses is always a challenge, especially this far out. We will chat about the cooler weekend in Thursday’s column.

I might mention there is a small chance we could get some light rain out of the cool-down this weekend. Hopefully no rain on the Fourth, but living here in the great Northwest we deal with it.

Looking back since the first of the year, I found Vancouver had 88 days with measurable precipitation since Jan. 1 and a total of 20.95 inches. That amount is still slightly above average. So out of 180 calendar days, we experienced 88 days of rain, or just about half. In between, however, we sure had some warm and hot weather. It seemed like summer was here months ago.

Enjoy the week and we will chat again Thursday.
