Weather Eye: Scattered rain will lead into lovely weekend

Two steps backward is today’s weather forecast. Or maybe I should have said two months backward to deal with the scattered rain showers overhead.

Unsettled weather will wane during the day Friday and we take a giant step forward with a pleasant weekend ahead of us. Not too hot and not too cold, just right in my book, with highs in the 75- to 80-degree range.

A weakening cold front was lurking off our coast Wednesday and was scheduled to bring some light rain and showers to the local area overnight and during the day. Rainfall amounts were expected to be on the light side, about a quarter-inch or less. If you get more then lucky you. It is nice to have a few showers from time to time to assist in the lawn and garden watering.

Two-thirds the way through the month of June and we are still running .75 inch of rain below average as of late Wednesday afternoon. We’ll see how much rain we can get in the rain bucket today to offset that a bit. Our average mean temperature that was running some 11 degrees above normal earlier is now just 1.5 degrees above average at 64.5 degrees.

With our average high of 75 for this time of the year and other than today’s chilly highs in the 60s, the rest of the month should be right at average or a little above. We will end up the month a little above average. I don’t know if we will catch up to the average expected rainfall for June, as the rest of the month looks rather dry after today and Friday, of course.

Just checking the radar as I finish my column and it showed some pretty intense bands of rain off the coast moving our way. Could be a brief frog strangler here and there. Next week looks pleasant with typical June days, some morning clouds and afternoon sunshine highs in the 75- to 85-degree range. June will end on a pleasant note just as it came in on June 1, with a high of 80 degrees.
