A Battle Ground-area teen was transported Saturday evening to Legacy Oregon Burn Center in Portland after flames erupted during an automotive repair project.

The 17-year-old male was working on a car when gasoline ignited and burned his arms and hands, Chief Steve Wrightson of Clark County Fire District 3 said.

“A friend who was helping him extinguished the fire,” he said.

The fire was reported at about 6:40 p.m. in the 1700 block of Northwest 14th Circle in Battle Ground.

Fire personnel are not sure how the fire started, Wrightson said. It is possible that the two young men were working on the car’s fuel line or carburetor.

Two paramedics accompanied the victim when an ambulance transported him to Legacy Oregon Burn Center; it is the only facility of its kind between Seattle and Sacramento, Calif., according to its website.
