The Clark County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday that Deputy Albin Boyse, an 18-year veteran of the office and school resource officer at Columbia River High School, was the deputy who shot the man who was killed following a Monday afternoon bank robbery and police pursuit.

Boyse fired his weapon after forcing a suspect in a robbery at a downtown US Bank branch to stop his vehicle, the sheriff’s office said Thursday.

Police sought Kenneth Allen Pointer, 43, of Portland after he took cash from the bank Monday afternoon then drove away. The police said no one saw a weapon during the robbery.

Vancouver police, sheriff’s deputies and state troopers pursued Pointer. Roughly 20 minutes later, Boyse stopped Pointer at the intersection of Northeast 10th Avenue and 219th Street/state Highway 502, in the community of Duluth. There, Boyse shot Pointer, according to police.

Boyse is also a member of the county SWAT team and a tactical medic. He has been on paid administrative leave since the shooting.
