A man and two juveniles appeared Tuesday in Clark County Superior Court in connection with a Monday evening shooting outside Washington Elementary School in Vancouver.

Klay Mantanona, 17, and Quandre O’Neal, 16, both of Vancouver, appeared on suspicion of first-degree assault. The juveniles were remanded to adult court based on their ages and the nature of the charges. Angelo Paga, 20, also appeared on suspicion of first-degree assault and possession of a dangerous weapon.

The incident began about 5:40 p.m. Monday as a physical and verbal fight between two groups who met up at the school, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in Superior Court. Mantanona allegedly pulled out a 9 mm handgun and pointed it at the opposing group of juveniles, then proceeded to fire multiple shots, the affidavit said. No injuries were reported.

Mantanona, O’Neal and Paga, who were all together, fled to Paga’s vehicle and sped away. They were later stopped by police at Fruit Valley Road and West Fourth Plain Boulevard, according to court documents. Police said they found an illegal set of brass knuckles on Paga.

Mantanona and Paga both told police that Mantanona fired the weapon at the other group. School video surveillance also showed Mantanona was the shooter, court records said.

During their court appearances, Judge Robert Lewis appointed the juveniles defense attorneys. Paga did not qualify for a court-appointed attorney and must hire his own.

Bail was set at $20,000, $30,000 and $40,000 for Paga, O’Neal and Mantanona, respectively.

They will be arraigned June 24.
