A man reportedly slumped over in a running car woke up when Vancouver police arrived early Monday morning, and rammed several police cars as he tried to escape.

Police were called at 5:50 a.m. after bystanders reported a driver slumped over the steering wheel of a running vehicle in the 13500 block of Southeast Mill Plain Boulevard.

According to a police news release, the first officer to arrive tried to talk to the driver. Instead, the driver gunned the engine and smashed into a patrol car.

Other officers arrived and the driver allegedly rammed their cars as well as he attempted to flee. After a short pursuit, he hit a tree and was boxed in by patrol cars. He was then arrested.

Police identified the suspect as Montgomery A. Hedges, 21. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation and treatment of injuries, and afterward was booked into the Clark County Jail on suspicion of vehicular assault.

None of the officers was reported injured.
