Community notebook: Vancouver USA Marathon set for Sunday

Advance registration is closed for the Vancouver USA Marathon and Half Marathon, which takes place on Sunday.

Runners and walkers can still sign up during Saturday’s VUM Active Expo at Esther Short Park. It costs $135 to register on Saturday for the full marathon, $110 for the half marathon.

The Freedom 5K takes place at 10 a.m. Saturday and costs $60. The Saturday run will be followed by a 1.2-mile kids marathon for ages 3-6. The cost for that event is $30 on Saturday.

The sixth edition of the Vancouver USA Marathon starts at 7 a.m. Sunday. The half marathon starts at 9 a.m.

Miracle League caps 10th season

The Miracle League of Vancouver will wrap up its spring season on Saturday with games, awards, a barbecue and a Dunk Your Coach fundraiser. The events run 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Union High School, 6201 N.W. Friberg-Strunk St.

Miracle League is baseball for individuals with disabilities. The Vancouver League formed in 2007.

Rower fifth in heat at nationals

Bailey Peterson finished fifth in her preliminary heat at the U.S. Rowing Youth National Championships on Friday and did not advance to the semifinals of the women’s singles competition.

Representing Vancouver Lake Crew, the Skyview High School junior rowed in the first heat of the entire weekend on Mercer Lake at West Windsor, N.J. Her time was 8 minutes, 49.254 seconds.

Peterson qualified for her first trip to the nationals by placing third in the singles final during the Northwest Youth Rowing Championships in May on Vancouver Lake.

CCRC runs draws 120

Brothers Oscar and Ahrlin Bauman led the way to the finish line of the Heritage High School 5K run on Wednesday.

Oscar Bauman crossed the finish line two seconds in front of Ahrlin, winning with a time of 15 minutes and 41 seconds. Third-place Jesse McChesney also broke 16 minutes, completing the 3.1-mile course in 15:54. The trio was two minutes faster than the fourth-place finisher.

A total of 121 runners finished the race. Abby Knight, who finished in 19:30, was the first female to finish. See the Community Sports Scoreboard for complete results.

This week the Clark County Running Club series of Wednesday evening races is back at Heritage High School, 7825 N.E. 130th Ave. The run starts at 7 p.m. Cost is $2. Registration opens at 6:30 p.m.

Shockwave falls in playoffs

The Pacific Warriors from Los Angeles defeated the Portland Fighting Shockwave 14-7 on Saturday in the first round of the Women’s Football Alliance playoffs.

It was the only loss of the season for the Fighting Shockwave, which won the Northwest Division of the women’s tackle football league with an 8-0 record. Saturday’s game was played at Milwaukie (Ore). High School. The Shockwave roster included players from Southwest Washington.
