It seems like June is blazing away time-wise. Almost half the month is gone. Weather is also on a fast track. Just as soon as we get rid of one cold trough of low pressure, another is on the horizon.
We are between systems, so enjoy a dry day with lots of sunshine and good north-to-northwest winds. A broad trough of cold, moist air will settle in Monday, lasting all week.
Various small disturbances embedded in the flow off the ocean will bring lots of clouds and showers, but we will have some dry periods.
When the coldest air aloft moved over us Friday afternoon, we sure had some active weather. Lots of thunder, and local downpours overfilled gutters and downspouts — the rain we really needed, as things were beginning to dry out. On the bright side, it saved many of us watering the lawn or garden Saturday.
Many neighborhoods around the county received much more rain than at the official station at Pearson Airfield. As of 5 p.m. Saturday its rain gauge had 0.44 inch. That is a third of an inch below average.
Thanks to cooler weather, we are down to 7 degrees above normal for June. I bet by this time next week we will be much closer to average.
The warm weather the past couple of months has pushed harvest of crops way ahead of schedule. Tyler Mode of Battle Ground picked fresh raspberries and blueberries Saturday from his parents’ home in Minnehaha.
I guess that is the bonus side of the abnormal weather. it won’t be long before those Yakima and Hermiston watermelons will be in the stores.
