BREMERTON — The Navy has blown up World War II munitions lost during the war in Ostrich Bay in Bremerton.
The Kitsap Sun reports that the 60-year-old Mark 13 fuzes from anti-aircraft shells were detonated on Thursday as part of an ongoing cleanup effort at the Jackson Park Housing Complex and Naval Hospital Bremerton.
The housing complex, now called The Landings, and the hospital sit on a 206-acre hillside bordering the bay that housed a ammunition depot from 1904 to 1959. The Environmental Protection Agency and the Navy have been working to clean up the site for more than two decades.
More than 400 fuzes were pulled from Ostrich Bay last summer. The munitions were stored in a bunker until the detonation this week.
