Vancouver firefighters are on the scene of a new apartment complex designed to offer housing to homeless people, many of whom have continuing addictions to drugs or alcohol.

The fire was reported at 9:53 a.m. at Lincoln Place, 1351 Lincoln Ave., in west Vancouver.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke in a second-floor apartment of the three-story building, which opened in February. It offers 30 studio apartments.

According to emergency radio traffic monitored at The Columbian, the smoke was from a cooking fire in a second-floor apartment. A female tenant was due to be checked by paramedics, but was reported to be walking around after being removed from the complex.

Other residents were evacuated as firefighters worked.
