A 2-acre fire at a logging site east of Stevenson is being investigated as arson, according to Skamania County Sheriff Dave Brown.

In a news release issued Friday, Brown set the damage from the fire at more than $1 million.

Firefighters were called to the site, above the community of Mill A, Thursday morning. They arrived to find fire burning in slash piles and log decks. Three pieces of logging equipment — a log processor and two loaders — were destroyed.

Fire investigators think someone set the equipment on fire, and the flames spread to the logs and slash, Brown said.

Fire crews from the state Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Forest Service, Mill A fire department and SDS Lumber worked throughout the day to contain the fire. A helicopter assisted before the fire was contained late Thursday afternoon. DNR fire crews were on scene Friday to maintain containment and mop up.

The timberland is owned by Broughton Lumber Co. of Bingen. Arnold Logging was the logging contractor.

The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office is investigating, as is the DNR.
