VANCOUVER — The Oregon Trail will be the focus of an afternoon presentation by author Rinker Buck on Saturday, June 25, at Fort Vancouver.
Buck’s most recent book, “The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey,” recounts his experience re-creating a covered wagon crossing of the 2,000-mile Oregon Trail.
In 2011, Buck made the journey from Missouri to Oregon with his brother, Nick, three mules, and their dog. It made them the first wagon travelers in more than a century to complete a crossing of the trail, according to a news release.
From 2 to 4 p.m., Buck will be at the Fort Vancouver Visitor Center, 1501 E. Evergreen Blvd., opposite Officers Row. He will talk with visitors and sign copies of his book. Costumed Fort Vancouver volunteers will discuss the role Fort Vancouver and Chief Factor Dr. John McLoughlin played in helping American emigrants settle in the Pacific Northwest.
At 4 p.m., Buck will deliver a free public lecture about the book and his experience writing it. The event will be hosted by the National Park Service, Vintage Books and the Friends of Fort Vancouver.
