VANCOUVER — Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center’s annual Healthy Kids Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Featuring roughly 40 different activities, the free event is popular with families because it gives kids hands-on experience of what it’s like to be at a hospital.

“Oftentimes, a child’s first impression of the hospital can be a scary one, especially if they or a family member are sick,” hospital spokeswoman Kelly Love said in a press release. “We hold this event for them because we want to make their first experience a positive one.”

Nurses, doctors and technicians will organize games and activities for kids, who can try out new robotic surgical equipment and learn how to put on a plaster cast. Firefighters and paramedics will let kids examine their equipment. Children can be fitted for new bicycle helmets, which cost $6 through the Randall Children’s Hospital. A team from Randall Children’s Hospital also will check child car seats for parents to ensure they’re installed properly.

Other activities include obstacle courses and a chance to shoot hoops with Blaze, mascot for the Portland Trail Blazers, who will be at the fair from 1 to 2 p.m.

Attracting nearly 800 children each year, the Healthy Kids Fair is held in the front lobby of the hospital at 2211 N.E. 139th Street, Vancouver. Get more information at www.legacyhealth.org/familyfun or 360-487-1000.
