Ridgefield — The Ridgefield School District will get $1,243,850 as part of the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction’s K-3 Class Size Reduction Grants. The grants will distribute nearly $234 million to 21 districts across the state to build new classrooms and provide more flexibility to reduce class size for younger students.
All four Ridgefield buildings, including the district’s two elementary schools, are overcrowded. A handout from the district states that as of March, South Ridge Elementary School enrolled 577 students and had a capacity of 525, and Union Ridge Elementary School had an enrollment of 800 students and a capacity of 700 students.
At the board of directors meeting May 10, the board voted to add 11 modular units, each holding two classrooms, at Union Ridge and South Ridge elementary schools.
The district set up a Capital Facilities Advisory Committee last year to plan for the future. The committee recently presented ideas to the board, including more than doubling the number of the district’s schools within the next 20 years.
