It was hot Saturday. Very hot. It could have been hotter, but a lack of strong east winds and filtering northwest winds helped keep us from the century mark as of 5 p.m. It was 97 degrees, but I’m sure some neighborhoods away from the river reached triple digits.
It will be hot again today before sea breezes push ever so slightly inland and cool us down to the 80s on Monday. The rest of the work week looks like things will turn more April-like with clouds and a chance of pesky showers and temperatures maybe only in the 60s for highs.
I was at my beach house on the northern tip of the Long Beach Peninsula escaping the heat — I thought. Northeast winds were blowing in the morning and the temperature shot up into the mid-80s with low humidity. By noon, the winds were from the north but gusty between 20-30 mpg.
A campfire got out of control and engulfed nearby dunes, and a major dune wildfire was underway on the Peninsula. Dry conditions and strong winds pushed the fire southward and threatened many homes. One had fire damage.
