Vancouver — Vancouver Mayor Tim Leavitt joined the Wear Orange campaign by declaring today “National Gun Violence Awareness Day” in the city.

The proclamation honors gun violence survivors, remembers the victims and asks communities to do more to prevent the effects of gun violence. Friends of Chicago teen Hadiya Pendleton, who was gunned down, created Wear Orange on June 2 to honor Hadiya’s birthday and draw attention to gun violence.

About 60 members of Moms Demand Action in Clark County are honoring the day by wearing orange and gathering to work to end violence locally. The local group has more than 300 members.

“Like the hunters wearing orange in the woods for protection, we are wearing orange to say that we should also be safe in our communities,” Mary Beth Cozza, a local Moms Demand Action volunteer, stated in a press release.

More than 100 mayors in 30 states along with celebrities, corporations and partner organizations are participating in the second annual National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Landmarks throughout the United States will be lit in orange, and more than 150 Orange meet-ups are set to take place in communities nationwide. For more information, go to www.WearOrange.org.
