A Portland man who disappeared Wednesday evening in the Columbia River is presumed drowned, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday evening.

The sheriff’s office dive team worked through the day searching for John David Martin. Divers completed searching the area around Ackerman Island, where Martin disappeared, shortly before 3 p.m. but were unsuccessful.

The sheriff’s office said further recovery efforts have been suspended pending any new information or developments.

Martin, 50, was on Ackerman Island when his boat became unanchored from the shore just before 9 p.m. Martin then reportedly swam after the boat but drifted into the river channel and disappeared from view, the sheriff’s office said.

Boats from the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office and the Vancouver, Gresham, Ore., and Portland fire departments responded and assisted in the search Wednesday night along with a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter. Crews used sonar, thermal imaging and drag bars but suspended the search about 11 p.m. Wednesday.
