Local Babe Ruth teams both 2-0 at regional

CAMAS — Led by a big day from Jasper Rank, Hazel Dell Metro improved to 2-0 at the Babe Ruth baseball 15-year-olds Pacific Northwest Regional on Thursday with an 8-2 win over Latah County, Idaho.

Pool play continues through Saturday at the 10-team tournament hosted by Camas-Washougal Babe Ruth at Louis Bloch Park. The semifinals and finals will be played on Sunday with the champion advancing to the Babe Ruth World Series for 15-year-olds Aug. 13-20 at Williston N.D.

Admission is free for spectators at the regional.

After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first against the Idaho champions, Metro scored four times in the bottom of the inning, then added two runs in the second inning to lead 6-1.

Rank went 4 for 4 at the plate and hit a pair of doubles. He scored three times and knocked in two runs. Rank also went the distance for the pitching victory. He had seven strikeouts while limiting the Idaho champions to three hits and one earned run.

Seven players contributed to HDM’s 11-hit attack. Alex Brady went 2 for 2. Leadoff man Jake Childers had a double and scored three runs. Sam Lauderdale had a double and an RBI. Cole Sherertz, Eastyn Culp and Colin Friese also had hits for Metro.

The Vancouver team continues pool-play with a 7 p.m. Friday game against Wyoming champion Riverton. Metro’s final pool-play game is at 4 p.m. Saturday against Kelso.

Kelso is also 2-0 in the National Division pool, and plays North Bend, Ore., today.

North Bend improved to 2-1 in the National Division pool with a 10-4 win over Riverton, Wyo., on Thursday.

Camas-Washougal 10, Calgary 4 — Carter Sutton went 3 for 3 with a double and scored two runs, and Jake Trupp was 2 for 2 with three runs scored as Camas-Washougal improved to 2-0 in the American Division pool.

Kirk Brown pitched one-hit ball over the first four innings for the win, and Pete Ramsey threw the last three for Camas-Washougal.

Damen Gilmore, Shane Jamison and Ramsey also had hits for the host team, which next plays Glacier, Montana, at 4 p.m. today.

Preston Thornton, Zach Collins, and Brown also scored runs for Camas-Washougal.

Ephrata is also 2-0 in the American Division pool. It will play The Dalles, Ore. (0-3) today.

Glacier (1-1) defeated The Dalles 10-3 on Thursday.

Camas-Washougal plays Ephrata on Saturday in the final game of pool play.
