Local golf: Docherty qualifies for U.S. Amateur

Union grad wins qualifying tournament in California

Alistair Docherty is headed to the U.S. Amateur Championship.

The Vancouver golfer, who recently finished his collegiate career at Chico State, won a two-day qualifying tournament in Turlock, Calif., on Monday.

Docherty shot 11-under to top a field of 70 golfers. The top two advanced to the U.S. Amateur Championship Aug. 15-20 at Oakland Hills Country Club near Detroit.

Docherty began his second round at 5-under par, two strokes behind leader Shintaro Ban. Docherty birdied three of the first six holes Monday to move into first.

On the back nine, Docherty, Ban and Andrew Moren jockeyed for the lead. Moren reached 12-under through 16 before he bogeyed the final two holes.

The difference for Docherty came when he made birdies on holes 15, 16 and 17, giving him eight on the day.
Moren placed second at 10-under with Ban in third, two strokes off the lead.

Tibbits at U.S. Junior Amateur — Spencer Tibbits, who won the Class 3A state championship as a Fort Vancouver junior, shot 9-over par 81 in the first round of the U.S. Junior Amateur near Chattanooga, Tenn.

Tibbits is in 130th place entering the second round of stroke play. The top 64 after Tuesday advance to match play.
