Save the Date: Hot time in Esther Short Park; cool cars cruisin’ along Main

Two-for-one events today in downtown Vancouver with Fire in the Park and Cruisin’ the Gut. Both free events begin around 10 a.m., with the Vancouver Firefighters Union offering a kids fire safety zone, fire truck displays, safety and preparedness activities and a teddy bear clinic. Donations will benefit the Vancouver Firefighters Community Assistance Fund. Fire in the Park will run until 3 p.m. today in Esther Short Park, Columbia and West Eighth streets. Meanwhile, the popular celebration of car culture will feature hot rods and classic cars cruising down Main Street, between 28th and Sixth streets, until late into the day. Get your carnival on during the Battle Ground Harvest Days from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. today, kicking off with the Grand Parade along East Main Street. Most of the fun takes place at Battle Ground Community Center and Fairgrounds Park, 912 E. Main St., Battle Ground. “Hello Vancouver!” returns with a show featuring the School of Piano Technology for the Blind and its upcoming Keys to the City event, beer tasting with Brewcouver, an appearance by Smokey Bear and the No Bull Community Challenge. Wine expert David Baker will be talking about wine and his first novel, “Vintage.” Baker is the director of the short documentary “American Wine Story,” with years of experience working at commercial vineyards. His book follows a food journalist’s attempt to save his career by tracking an infamous bottle of wine from Burgundy through Russia. The 23rd annual Row for the Cure fundraiser is July 24 at Vancouver Lake Regional Park, 6801 N.W. Lower River Road, Vancouver. The event is a sanctioned regatta with participants raising funds to support Susan G. Komen Oregon and SW Washington. Bethany Vineyards and Winery will feature the spin-off band Heart by Heart at 5 p.m. July 24. The group includes Heart’s co-founding member and bassist Steve Fossen and original Heart drummer Mike Derosier.
