A fire in a trash bin at Thomas Jefferson Middle School scorched the holding area surrounding it at Thursday evening.

The fire was reported shortly after 6 p.m., and a Vancouver Fire Department engine arrived to quickly snuff the fire, Clark County Fire District 6 spokesman David Schmitke said.

The school is in District 6, but multiple fires Thursday had the departments swapping calls, he said.

The bin appeared to be full of shredded paper, he said, and the fire didn’t damage any school buildings.

There was no clear indication of what started the fire, or whether it was set intentionally, he said. The Clark County Fire Marshal’s Office was investigating.
