Vancouver – Share, the nonprofit operating homeless shelters in Clark County, locally raised $100,203 through its annual Hunger Appeal. The CenturyLink Foundation provided a $100,000 match through its 2016 Feed the Children Backpack Buddies Food Drive that happened last month, bringing the total to $200,203.
“We are truly grateful to our community for recognizing the need of individuals and families who rely on food assistance programs, helping us to locally raise $100,203,” said Diane McWithey, Share’s executive director said in a news release. “With the success of this challenge, we will be able to continue supporting the more than 1,850 children at 90 schools who receive bags of food each week during the school year through our Backpack Program.”
The backpack program provides food for weekends to children receiving free or reduced-fee lunches. During the Hunger Appeal the community donated 28,000 pounds of nonperishable food items. Several area businesses held food drives.
