Visitors to George Schmid Memorial Park will soon have a new access road to get to the Washougal ballfields starting next week.

The Washougal School District is going to build a new transportation facility behind district headquarters, which is on the same property as the ballfields. The main entrance to the ballfields on Evergreen Way will be fenced off for the next few months for the project.

To make up for the closed access road, the city of Washougal is building a temporary road to give visitors access the ballfields. The road will connect with the intersection of 45th and B streets.

Construction started Tuesday, and the temporary road is expected to open Monday, said Trevor Evers, Washougal’s director of Public Works, adding that the road could be in use for close to a year.

“We’re going to work with the district to try and get the other access point opened up as fast as possible,” Evers said.

Construction on the new transportation facility is expected to start this summer and last until February, with the building ready for occupancy around May. The $2.3 million transportation facility is part of the district’s $57.7 million capital improvement bond Washougal voters passed in 2015 to address safety and facility needs in the district.

Evers said he hopes the main entrance to the ballfields will be back in use before construction wraps up. The city is still looking at the temporary road to see where a stop sign should go, he said, adding that the temporary road will cost about $600 in labor and materials to build.
