Community notebook: Twilight Half draws nearly 500 runners

Christopher Sheaffer of Portland won the Twilight Half Marathon on Saturday evening.

A total of 479 runners and walkers completed the 13.1-mile course, which started and ended at Vancouver Lake Park.

Sheaffer, 32, was timed in 1 hour, 14 minutes and 22 seconds. He was 3:35 in front of runner-up Zachary Romer of Seattle.

The female champion was Luz Rodriguez of Silverdale. The 39-year-old was the 11th overall finisher. Her time was 1:29:51. There were 315 females and 164 males who finished the race.

Don Conner, 53, from Battle Ground was the top finisher from Southwest Washington. He was fifth overall with a time of 1:27:58. Three Vancouver men finished in the top 10. Casey Kemp, 28, was seventh (1:28:57). Mike Floyd, 47, was eighth (1:28:58). Rolf Vellek, 47, was ninth (1:29:29).

Lee Parks, 33, of Portland won the Twilight 10-kilometer run in 35:40. Robert Roper, 40, of Vancouver was fourth in 39:04. Courtney Beard, 19, of Happy Valley, Ore., was the female champion. She was fifth overall in 41:04. La Center’s Laura Min, 27, was sixth overall in 41:14. A total of 507 runners and walkers finished the 10-kilometer course.

The Twilight 5-kilometer champions were both from Willoughby Hills, Ohio. The was Philip Yeung, 25, won by more than a minute with his time of 16:20. Mallory Kreider, 23, was the first female. She finished fifth overall in 18:47. A total of 421 runners and walkers finished the 5-kilometer course.

The Children’s Cancer Association is the charity affiliated with the Twilight Half Marathon.

142 run in CCRC races

A season-high 142 runners completed the Clark County Running Club Wednesday event on July 6.

A total of 106 of them recorded times for the 3-mile run along the Salmon Creek Community Park Trail, with Oscar Bauman finishing first with a time of 14 minutes and 57 seconds.

Shun Yamaguchi, 15, was first to finish the newly-added 5-mile race. His time was 31 minutes and 25 seconds.

The weekly series shifts to Washougal this Wednesday for a run along the dike starting and ending near Cottonwood Beach.

Two win taekwondo medals

Two members of Vancouver Taekwondo Academy won medals during the USA Taekwondo National Championships, which concluded on Sunday in Richmond, Va.

Mary Nguyen won a bronze medal in the women’s age 18-32 black belt light weight division. Xaaran Dolence won a gold medal in the girls 15-17 blue belt light-heavyweight division.

A total of seven Vancouver Taekwondo Academy athletes competed at the national championships.

Soccer team preps for nationals

The FC Salmon Creek Nemesis will face teams from Indiana, Ohio and New York in group play at the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championship Tournament. The tournament takes place July 26-31 at Frisco, Texas.

The Nemesis, coached by Tina Ellertson, are the Far West Regional champion for the girls under-15 age division. A total of eight teams — four regional champions and four US Youth Soccer National League representatives qualified for these nationals.

The top two teams in each group will advance to the semifinals.
