Long-distance hiker to reach Cascade Locks on Sunday

DETROIT, Ore. — Jeff Garmire of Vancouver passed through scenic Jefferson Park on the north side of Oregon’s Mount Jefferson on Wednesday as he continues northbound on the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail.

On Sunday, he’ll meet with family and friends in Cascade Locks, Ore., the closest he’ll be to home on his attempt to complete a calendar year Triple Crown of long-distance hiking (Appalachian, Pacific Crest and Continental Divide trails).

He completed the Appalachian trail in February, March and April.

Homemade meals from his family have spiced up the trip north through Oregon, but the mosquitoes have been awful.

“As has become habit, I packed up as quickly and efficiently as possible to limit the exposure to the surrounding mosquitoes,’’ Garmire wrote in his blog. “Once moving, I continue to outrun the pesky bugs. I walked past multiple other hikers, but kept conversions at a minimum to avoid the bugs.’’

Another blog post says: “I continue to wonder how the mosquitos continue to bite me since I thought they had every square inch of me covered in bites.’’

He’s at about mile 2,000 on the 2,650-mile Pacific Crest Trail.
