Efraimson, Winger to start Olympic Trials competition Thursday

Both to compete in preliminaries with eyes on finals

Alexa Efraimson of Camas and Skyview grad Kara Winger will compete at the Olympic Trials on Thursday.

Efraimson will run in the first round of the 1,500 meters at 6:26 p.m.

Thirty runners will compete in three heats, with the top six in each heat plus the next six fastest times advancing to the semifinals Friday. From the 24 semifinalists, 12 advance to Sunday’s final.

Winger competes in the javelin preliminaries at 3:30 p.m. Of 24 athletes, 12 advance to Saturday’s finals.

The top three in each event qualify for the U.S. Olympic team.

Winger is the American record holder in the javelin and is aiming for her third Olympics. Efraimson is the national Junior record holder in the 1,500.

Based on seeding marks, both are projected to reach the finals.
