Weather Eye: Clouds, scattered drizzle part of cool, damp summer underway

I trust everyone survived the Fourth of July in good old fashion. The weather was a mixed bag depending on where you were in the state. The coast had clouds and drizzle and even a few light showers as well as some clearing periods with sunshine.

Inland skies were overcast across Clark County with a bit of blue sky peeking through late in the afternoon. Afternoon temperatures in the county, as at the ocean beaches, were in the low- to mid-60s.

The weather this week looks rather grim for July. More clouds and scattered drizzle are on tap here and there, especially along the beach and over the mountains. Then a weak ridge of high pressure builds inland Wednesday before yet another weather system rotates inland later on Thursday, lasting into the weekend.

Vancouver’s average July rainfall is around 0.70 inch. By the end of this weekend, we could surpass that if forecast models are correct. Last July, we ended up with slightly more than a quarter-inch of rain.

Things have really changed since our warm-to-hot weather of the past three months, and the cool and potentially damp weather is forecast to continue.

Several inches of rain are forecast in the Cascades over the next two weeks, and snow could fall down to the 6,000-foot level in the mountains. A little white dusting for Timberline? I guess this is all good news as far as wildfire season goes. The past three summers were hot and dry. Not this year.

I see lots of green tomatoes on the vines. Will we see many red ones in August? Time will tell, but I think nature foretells a cool and damp summer.
