Strangers have arrived at area doorsteps claiming they were led there while hunting down a missing cellphone with a GPS-based phone tracker app, the Vancouver Police Department said. It could be an innocent mistake, police said, but it also could be an excuse to gain entry into a home.

Police have received no reports of anyone using such a technique to get inside a home and commit a crime, but they remind residents to be careful about to whom they open their doors. Call 911 for suspicious or aggressive people at the door, the department said.

People who have tracked a lost phone to a stranger’s house should contact police before approaching the house, police said.
