Being part of the WSU Clark County Master Food Preservers provides a chance for people to learn more about food preservation and food safety, then share that knowledge with the community.

Master Food Preservers do a wide variety of tasks, including staffing the Food Safety help line, developing and staffing displays at community events, testing pressure canning gauges, and teaching and assisting in community classes.

They volunteer year-round, with the majority of events between June and September, usually on weekends. Volunteers enjoy the camaraderie of people who share common interests, develop friendships and have opportunities for continuing education.

The program offers 50 hours of training over seven weeks. It includes an in-depth study of food safety and specific procedures in food handling, preparation and preservation. Instruction follows the most current updates and guidelines, with hands-on food preservation sessions.

Application deadline is March 18. Two orientation sessions are scheduled at 78th Street Heritage Farm, 1919 N.E. 78th St., Vancouver: 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 25 and 5:30 to 7 p.m. March 30.

The training sessions will be from 8:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on seven Fridays, April 8 through May 20.

The $225 fee covers notebooks, supplies, books and labs. Class size is limited.
