Before Wednesday’s game, the Mountain View girls basketball team presented a check for the $3,820 it raised for a local breast cancer organization.

Once the game began, the Thunder were done being charitable.

Mountain View beat Evergreen 55-33 thanks to a defense that allowed just two points in the second and third quarters combined.

Hailey Hartney scored 26 points as Mountain View snapped a three-game losing streak.

“What allows us to right the ship is that the kids don’t ever get too down,” Mountain View coach Mat Clark said. “They have a good attitude and we are able to give them perspective in tough times. They trust us enough to know that perspective is correct.”

Wednesday’s win puts Mountain View (11-6, 5-4) all alone in third place in the 4A Greater St. Helens League with three games to play.

Mountain View won’t catch league leaders Skyview (9-0) and Camas (8-1). But the Thunder could make noise in the district tournament if they play like it did in the middle quarters on Wednesday.

From the end of the first quarter to early in the fourth, Mountain View outscored Evergreen 30-2.

Leading the charge was Hartney, who scored 15 points over that stretch.

“We drilled our offense a lot this week,” Hartney said. “We knew (Evergreen’s) zone is super high pressure, so we worked it into the high post. We were hitting our shots tonight.”

The 6-foot-1 forward was a force near the basket and from outside as well. Hartney finished with four 3-pointers and was 6-for-8 from the free-throw line.

When the teams last played on Jan. 6, Mountain View scrapped for a hard-fought 50-43 win.

Evergreen (7-11, 3-7) trailed 17-13 after one quarter and showed every sign of offering another tough test. But then the wheels came off.

Mountain View clamped down Evergreen freshman Ahna Burney, who had 22 points on Jan. 6. She was held to eight on Wednesday.

“Last time (Burney) had a ton of points against us,” Hartney said. “So we knew we had to stop her. I think we kept her contained.”

With Wednesday’s strong showing, Mountain View hopes to move well past its midseason slump, which included a loss to last-place Heritage.

“We’ve been telling these girls, ‘you control your own destiny,” Clark said. “We told them that after the Heritage game. … We still control our own destiny with three games to go.”
