A 94-year-old man remained in the hospital in serious condition Monday following a Sunday vehicle crash in Brush Prairie, but his passenger, a 92-year-old woman, has since been treated and released, according to the hospital.

Alvin L. McDowell and Wava E. Gudmunson, both from Battle Ground, were taken to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center after police say another driver slammed his pickup into the rear of McDowell’s sedan as he slowed down to avoid a disabled tractor-trailer. Both vehicles were heading north on state Highway 503 at the time of the crash.

The Washington State Patrol blamed the crash on inattention and said that the driver of the pickup, Scott M. Maynard, 27, of Clatskanie, Ore., was cited for following to closely.

Neither Maynard nor his four passengers were injured, the State Patrol said.
