The Clark College men’s basketball team rolled to a 107-72 win Saturday over Umpqua Community College at the O’Connell Center. The Riverhawks won the women’s game, 78-58.

Fast starts were key in both games.

• Clark men — Bryan Berg scored 31 points as the Clark men scored the game’s first 12 points on the way to the 35-point win over Umpqua of Roseburg, Ore.

“Bryan Berg was really good, but we got a lot of contributions from different guys,” Clark coach Alex Kirk said.

The Penguins had five players score in double figures, including Glenn Baral (15), Aubrey Stephens (14), Devon Hawkins (11) and Darrius Mathis (10). Hawkins also had nine rebounds. Mathis added seven rebounds and nine assists.

“Our guards continued to put pressure on them all night,” Kirk said. “We came at them with pace.”

The Penguins face a couple of tough road games this week with games at Clackamas on Wednesday and Lane on Saturday.

• Clark women — The Penguins fell into a 33-16 hole after a quarter of play and never recovered.

Livia Strandberg scored 16 points to lead the Penguins, who shot 21 of 72 (29 percent) for the game, including 3 of 16 (19 percent) from 3-point range.

Caylee Newsom scored 13 points, Brean Nueku added 11 and Kendyl Cone had 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Syd Clark led Umpqua with 20 points and a game-high 10 assists.
