Ridgefield — Twenty-plus Ridgefield High School students participated in a schoolwide Poetry Out Loud competition, in which they memorized and recited poems.

It’s the third year Ridgefield has participated in the national competition, which began 2004 and has about 2.7 million students compete.

All English students at the school had to memorize and recite a poem in their class, and judges evaluated students on their physical presence, voice and articulation, dramatic appropriateness and ability to convey the poem’s meaning to audience members.

At the schoolwide competition on Jan. 13, junior Michaela Cloyd finished first for her readings of Donald Davie’s “Across the Bay” and Kevin Young’s “Cadillac Moon.” Logan Summers, junior, and Ashlee Hatcher, senior, finished second and third, respectively.

Cloyd will compete in the Southwest Washington Regional Finals on Feb. 2 at Educational Services District 112.
