1. Running goals

The Resolution Run takes participants on a 10K or 5K course, starting and ending at the Gardener Center and Battle Ground Cinema, 1700 S.W. Ninth Ave., Battle Ground. There also will be a 1K Cub Run for kids. Music and a pancake breakfast from Northwood Public House and Brewery will follow the races. For those bold enough, slip down the icy Polar Bear Slide. Event proceeds benefit Clark County Fire & Rescue’s Fire Cadet Program Booster Club. Day-of-race registration opens at 8 a.m. Jan 10 for $55, with $15 for the kids run. 2. Can you solve it?

Break out your detective hat for Clue in Downtown Camas from 5 to 8 p.m. Jan. 8. Visitors can try to solve the case of the missing cupcakes by finding clues at participating downtown merchants, starting at Journey Community Church, 304 N.E. Fourth Ave., Camas. There also will be kids’ crafts, free mini cupcakes, prizes and a screening of the 1985 film “Clue,” rated PG, at 8 p.m. at the Liberty Theatre, 315 N.E. Fourth Ave., Camas. 3. Hobbits party

Say Happy Birthday, J.R.R. Tolkien with McMenamins as it celebrates the influential author with an all-day event starting at 11 a.m. Jan. 9 at McMenamins Kennedy School, 5736 N.E. 33rd Ave., Portland. The celebration includes a marathon screening of the “The Lord of the Rings” film trilogy, live performances of “The Hobbit’s Greatest Hits” by Willamette Radio Workshop at 3 and 5 p.m. and music by the Garcia Birthday Band at 7 p.m. All ages and costumes are welcome. 4. Strength and speed

The CrossFit Fort Vancouver Championship will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 9 and 10 at the Clark County Event Center at the Fairgrounds, 17402 N.E. Delfel Road, Ridgefield. During the two-day event, 16 male pairs and 16 female pairs will compete in a series of competitive fitness events, hosted by CrossFit Fort Vancouver. The winners will receive money and prizes. All events will take place at the event center, except for the swim trial, which is at 7:50 a.m. Jan. 10 at the Clark County Family YMCA, 11324 N.E. 51st Circle, Vancouver. Seating will be first come, first served at the YMCA. Tickets are $33 for weekend pass, $23 for military weekend pass and free for ages 17 and younger. 5. Brain science

Psychologist Kenneth Brown will discuss the neuroscience of chemical dependency and addiction in Science on Tap’s “Brains, Drugs and Addiction” at 7 p.m. Jan. 13 at the Kiggins Theatre, 1011 Main St., Vancouver. Learn how different areas of the brain interact to create chronic conditions such as alcoholism and drug dependence. Brown also will talk about the steps the scientific and medical communities are taking to change treatment practices and help people succeed in staying clean and sober.
