Week 4 winter sports prep athlete of the week: Jax Purwins, Camas gymnastics

Jax Purwins of Camas gymnastics was voted The Columbian’s high school winter sports athlete of the week, sponsored by Athletes Corner, for the week ending Jan. 2.

Purwins collected 44 percent of the 4,231 votes cast by fans to beat out Tommy Strassenberg of Union boys wrestling, who had 35 percent.

Purwins won the all-around with a score of 35.35 in a multi-team meet at Naydenov.

The other nominees were Haley Horrocks of Skyview girls wrestling, Jacob Hjort of Columbia River boys basketball and Cherita Daugherty of Prairie girls basketball.

Nominees and the online ballot are posted at www.360preps.com each Monday and voting continues until 8 p.m. Thursday.

Athletes may be elected player of the week once during the regular season, and no athlete can be nominated for the honor in consecutive weeks.
