Hazmat crews were called to Fort Vancouver Way in front of Clark College for a gas leak that evacuated a building and closed traffic for about an hour and a half Thursday.

Emergency personnel were called to the area just after 11 a.m. after a gas line was hit during some construction work, Vancouver Fire Department Capt. Scott Willis said.

The agency sent two engines, a truck and a battalion chief to the scene and worked to keep everyone at a safe distance while crews from Northwest Natural Gas dealt with the leak, Willis said.

Southbound traffic on the road between East Fourth Plain Boulevard and East McLoughlin Boulevard was blocked and a building at Clark College was evacuated for precautionary reasons, Willis said.

The incident disrupted the area until the leak was fixed at about 12:30 p.m.
