Vancouver — The Vancouver City Council appointed Councilor Anne McEnerny-Ogle from its ranks to serve as mayor pro tem.
McEnerny-Ogle, who is two years into her first council term, was nominated for the position by Councilor Jack Burkman. McEnerny-Ogle is replacing Larry Smith, who retired from the council after finishing his third term Dec. 31.
The mayor pro tem’s job is to fill in when the mayor is absent at council meetings and public events. The monthly salary for mayor pro tem is $2,000. City councilors earn $1,800 a month, and Mayor Tim Leavitt makes $2,300 a month for his city duties.
The mayor pro tem role can be time consuming. In a 2014 questionnaire for the Vancouver Citizen’s Commission on Mayor/Council Salaries, Smith estimated he spent nearly 40 hours a week, including weekends, representing the city at functions. The commission meets every two years, coinciding with the biennial budget.
