Weather Eye: Balmy weather persists, at least for one more day

Fine late-winter weather continued Wednesday, with only scattered clouds from a dissipating weather system moving across Clark County skies. High pressure is with us another day, with afternoon temperatures reaching the mid-60s in many locations today.

Those east winds will be back near the Columbia River Gorge and in the eastern areas of the county. It appears winter and the month of February wants to end on a wet note, with rain late on Friday and again on Sunday. The weekend, right? Appears that has been the pattern lately. I think Saturday will be the best day, with the greatest chance of showers early.

The threat of showers is also on tap for leap day on Monday. Our meteorological spring begins Tuesday, and March will come in like a lamb, at least at this point. How did March arrive last year?

Looking back in the record books, the first day of March 2015 had mostly sunny skies and a high of 57 degrees and a low of 42 degrees, with no rain. Monday may be very similar, but as always, that’s subject to change. I guess that falls into the lamb category. We’ll have to wait and see if the lion rounds out the end of the month .

Don’t you like old folklore? March is such a fickle month, anyway. It seems like it can’t make up its mind and usually provides a good mixture of winter and spring weather. If March comes in like a lamb, it will go out like a lion, and vice versa. We’ll stay tuned for the old folklore prediction. I wonder what the groundhog is up to nowadays?

Last year, March turned out to be a warm and wet month. This year, I have seen a couple different predictions but both indicate that it will be warmer than average, with one wetter and one drier. Flip a coin, anyone?

We’ll chat on Sunday and I will be reporting from the beach this weekend. I’ll let you know how the weather is there. Be safe.
