Two juveniles suspected of beating and carjacking a 50-year-old man in a motel parking lot Tuesday night appeared in court Wednesday on suspicion of robbery.

Donnie R. Rodgers, 16, of Vancouver was remanded to Superior Court based on his age and the nature of the allegation — first-degree robbery. However, his hearing was set over to this morning so that a supplemental probable cause affidavit could be provided to the court.

Fifteen-year-old Mik’l Sandoval appeared on suspicion of second-degree robbery in Juvenile Court. He is set to be arraigned Feb. 29.

A third suspect, who police say is a teenager, has yet to be captured, according to the Vancouver Police Department.

Officers were dispatched at about 7:15 p.m. Tuesday to a reported robbery at the Motel 6 at 221 Chkalov Drive. The victim, identified in court records as Jeffrey Perron, told police three males approached him while he was inside his vehicle, demanded his keys and assaulted him until he handed them over. Police later learned the three suspects are younger than 18.

The teens got inside Perron’s vehicle while he also was still inside. He jumped out of the vehicle as the suspects drove away, police said. Perron was treated at the scene for injuries that were not life-threatening.

Car crashes, flips over

Perron provided a description of his stolen vehicle and the suspects. Another officer spotted the vehicle nearby and followed it until the vehicle crashed and flipped over at the intersection of Northeast 124th Avenue and Eighth Street. Three boys ran from the scene, police said.

Vancouver police and Clark County Sheriff’s deputies set up a containment area and found two of the suspects still in the area. Perron positively identified them as the boys who robbed him, court records show.

Both teens are being held at the Clark County Juvenile Detention Center. They were each appointed a defense attorney.

It was not immediately known if Rodgers has prior criminal history. Sandoval has a pending case in juvenile drug court and is on supervision in another case, court records show. He appeared in court Wednesday afternoon for a drug court review.
