All right, who did it? Who turned on the light Saturday? If you take credit for allowing the clouds to part and the sun to shine upon us, I thank you. Although the sun was out in full force for late February, temperatures felt on the cool side. But guess what? Vancouver’s high and low of 52 and 36 were dead-on average. With the high temperatures earlier in the week in the 60s, Saturday did feel quite chilly.
One more weather system slides through today for clouds and a cool period of rain lingering into Monday. Then, high pressure builds inland and we dry out and warm slowly. Forecast models show rain for the upcoming weekend, of course.
This comes as no surprise; Portland and Vancouver had their wettest winters so far, and we have a few days yet as meteorological winter ends Feb. 29. Seattle also had its wettest winter on record. The mountains had a fresh dumping of snow the past several days, and mounts Hood and St. Helens look a frost white. We needed that, as we were slipping to about 93 percent of normal as far as water content was concerned. I’m sure we are back to normal or above.
The ground is so saturated with moisture, it is a bit early to start digging in the garden. I remember some years planting peas around this time of the year. But as the sun shines between the showers, it will invite some folks. I see some new blades of dark green grass popping up in the soggy soils. Is spring far behind?
