PORTLAND — Emmett Naar scored 18 points, and Joe Rahon’s late basket helped Saint Mary’s beat Portland 74-72 on Thursday night.

A close game throughout, it was tied at 70 with 1:14 to go on a Calvin Hermanson free throw for Saint Mary’s (21-4, 12-3 West Coast). After Dane Pineau blocked a Bryce Pressley shot, he made a layup at the other end to put the Gaels up 72-70.

Gabe Taylor tied it at 72 with a pair of free throws with 31 seconds left. On the next possession, Saint Mary’s held as long as they could, then Rahon’s jumper with three seconds left broke the tie. Alec Wintering’s last-second 35-foot rimmed out.

Pineau and Rahon both finished with 13 points and six rebounds apiece. Hermanson ended with 10 points.

Portland (11-17, 5-10) was led by Pressley with 25 points and Wintering had 18.

Saint Mary’s remains one game behind Gonzaga (21-6, 13-2) in the conference. The teams play at Gonzaga on Saturday.
