Battle Ground schools offer info on alternative programs

Information sessions, open houses available; application underway

Parents of students in Battle Ground Public Schools are invited to information sessions and open house sessions for the district’s alternative learning experience programs and to submit applications for the 2016-17 school year.

Current students may apply for any programs that serve the grade they will be in next school year. Enrollment in alternative programs is free. The admission process, based on qualifications, is specific to each program. Recommendations or counselor approval may be required. Students who live within district boundaries will be given priority over students from other districts. Transportation is not provided unless specified.

CAM (Character and Academics for the Marketplace) Academy

Grades: 3-12.

A rigorous alternative education requiring parent participation. CAM’s mission is to support and promote students’ academic success, positive character development and acquisition of marketplace skills that will facilitate their success in college and a global society. At school four days each week, students study a core curriculum of English language arts, history, science and mathematics and computer technology. One day per week students do at-home learning with parents in health and fitness and visual and performing arts. Prospective students must take an assessment.

Application deadline: 9 a.m. March 14.

Center for Agriculture, Science and Environmental Education, or CASEE

Grades: 9-12.

A science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, program integrating biological, environmental and agricultural sciences with English language arts. Students attend classes on the CASEE campus, an 80-acre learning laboratory where scientific concepts are explored and reinforced through experiential learning in the classroom, in the lab and outdoors. Transportation is provided to CASEE from both Prairie and Battle Ground high schools. Application requires teacher recommendations.

Application deadline: March 28.

River HomeLink

Grades: K-12.

A parent-partnered program providing home-schooling families a range of educational support. Families choose from a pure home-school model that offers curricula help combined with weekly meetings with a certificated teacher; a blended home-school model that combines home-school lessons with classes on core subjects and/or extracurricular subjects; a classroom model in the program’s academic setting or online classes for students in grades 6-12. Prospective students must take an assessment.

Summit View High School

Grades: 9-12.

An individualized learning experience for self-directed learners up to 21 years old including independent students, working teens, at-risk students and teen parents. Students earn credits and transition into a traditional educational setting or prepare for life after high school. Admission is by recommendation of a school counselor.
