A fire Sunday at an apartment complex that displaced six people and two pets started with a space heater placed too close to curtains, Vancouver fire officials said.

The heater ignited the curtains and the fire spread to a couch that a resident had been resting on, Vancouver Fire Marshal Heidi Scarpelli said.

The renter saw the flames and evacuated herself and her children before firefighters were called to the scene, Scarpelli said.

The Vancouver Fire Department was dispatched at 4:11 p.m. Sunday to the Indian Hills apartments, 7911 N.E. Loowit Loop, with arriving crews reporting flames billowing out of a back unit, firefighter Darrin Deming said.

Crews attacked the blaze and brought the flames under control within about 20 minutes, he said.

The fire heavily damaged one unit and caused charring and water damage to a second unit, Scarpelli said. The estimated damage to the structure and contents is $250,000.
