A Clark County Jail inmate made a first appearance in Superior Court on Thursday after allegedly setting a fire in the jail and smashing a kiosk.

Izak L. Shackelford, 24, a transient, appeared to face allegations of first-degree arson and second-degree malicious mischief stemming from the Tuesday incident.

Shackelford had been in one of the jail’s day rooms by himself when he allegedly took the cord from an electric razor and used it to start a fire in a mop bucket filled with books, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Shackelford then took the handle off of a broom and used it to shatter the glass on a communications kiosk located on the wall of the day room. The kiosk is inoperable and will have to be replaced, the affidavit said.

The incident was captured on video surveillance cameras in the jail, according to court records.

During his hearing, Shackelford waived having a defense attorney present. Judge Robert Lewis set bail at $20,000, court records show.

Shackelford has been in custody since Jan. 6 for a community custody violation, according to the jail’s roster.

He is next scheduled to appear in court Feb. 26 for an order to review competency.
