Scammers ramping up during tax season

Tax season also means more tax scams.

Clark County’s 911 agency saw a spike in reports of Internal Revenue Service impersonators and tax-related scam calls Tuesday morning, with some scammers going so far as to threaten arrest. The dispatch center is reminding people that such calls and threats are bogus.

The Clark Regional Emergency Services Agency said that most of the scam reports came from elderly people, and that scam calls came from various area codes from around the country.

The IRS impersonators called specific people by name to say they were offering final notice for payment. If a payment isn’t made immediately, the call taker could be arrested, scammers said.

The IRS recommends that anyone who gets such a call hang up immediately.

The IRS will never call about tax payments without first sending a bill. The IRS also won’t make demands for payment without first offering a chance to ask questions or make an appeal, won’t require a specific type of payment, won’t ask for debit or credit card numbers, and won’t threaten to bring in local law enforcement to make an arrest for not paying.

To report a suspected scam call, go to the IRS’ investigative services website at 1.usa.gov/1ClYZbP or call 1-800-366-4484.

Also, people can use the Federal Trade Commission’s online complaint tool at 1.usa.gov/1TR0tkF and add “IRS telephone scam” in the notes.
