Weather Eye: Bundle up: Colder weather is on its way

Monday was mostly dry for the after-Christmas sales and, of course, exchanges. As clouds increased in the late afternoon it sure looked like a snow sky. However there was too much warm air aloft for snow. But, as I was writing this column, there were reports of a few snowflakes and ice pellets. Rain was forecast for overnight with a few showers today.

Early Monday morning Vancouver dipped to a chilly 27 degrees for the low temperature. Had the clouds and moisture arrived then we may have had a couple hours of a wintry mix. We may have to deal with that in the upcoming days.

After we get rid of the lingering moisture today, Wednesday and Thursday appear dry with seasonal temperatures. When you think of New Year’s and the month of January, one can usually envision the chill that can be present in this cold winter month.

Looking at the longer-range forecast models, they mostly agree that an arctic air mass will slide down over us and bring chilly temperatures and perhaps some snow as it passes through. Then we have to keep a wary weather eye out for later with a transitional event.

Bottom line is colder weather is on the way late in the week and over the weekend as it looks right now. Highs Sunday and Monday could be near or below freezing, with lows in the teens and 20s.

The average mean temperature for December so far is 36.7 degrees in Vancouver, 4 degrees below normal. Our precipitation is also running below average with 4.28 inches as of 5 p.m. Monday. That was 1.33 inches below average.

We will have added some to that Monday night and today but not enough to bring things up to “normal.” With another shot or two later in the week we will add to that, but possibly remain below average for the month.

Take good care and we will have our last chat of 2016 on Thursday.
