Why: Doomsday Brewing Co. was established in September 2012 and has two locations in Clark County. One is on Main Street in Vancouver, where food is provided by Herb N’ Roots and Main Street Melts, and the other is in Washougal, where hotdogs, pizza and a few appetizers are prepared in house. My visit was to Doomsday in Washougal, where there are 10 brews on tap in addition to cider and wine.
What I tried: My dining companions and I decided on the potato skins and jalapeno poppers to start. We settled on the Armageddon pizza made with pepperoni, Canadian bacon, pineapple and jalapenos and the Mayan pizza topped with barbecue sauce, grilled chicken, red onions, sun-dried tomatoes and feta. We also tried the Do You! pizza, which starts with the diner’s choice of garlic marinara or barbecue sauce topped with smoked mozzarella cheese. We settled on the garlic marinara base and had artichoke hearts, pepperoni and jalapenos added to the pie.
The potato skins were made with soft, baked potatoes halved with a well scooped out of each half to hold cheddar cheese and bacon bits, then finished with a dollop of sour cream. The skins were somewhat heated, enough to melt the cheese, but they were not served with the twice-baked quality found at most other establishments. The jalapeno poppers were a standard prepackaged and deep-fried variety.
The pizza crust at Doomsday is of medium thickness and has a fair amount of crispiness to it. It reminded me of Little Caesars’ pizza crust but with less flavor. Both the garlic marinara and the barbecue sauce bases were tasty, but the rest of the toppings were unimpressive and lacked flavor, especially the chicken on the Mayan, which should have brought a grilled presence to the pie, as the menu noted. Instead, it had an unappetizing reheated flavor. My dining companions and I concluded that the Mayan was the best of the three in spite of the chicken’s shortfall.
