Camas School District board member Mary Tipton resigned at the board’s meeting on Monday, as she is moving to a new home outside of her director district.
She was appointed to the board in November 2008 after the death of her husband, Gary Tipton, and was then elected to keep the position. Tipton, a retired Hewlett Packard accountant and manager, is a founding member of the Camas Educational Foundation, where she served three terms on its board as treasurer, legacy fund chair and vice president. She also led the initial investigation committee for the Camas High School Math, Science and Technology Magnet Program.
“This is truly a loss for the district,” Superintendent Jeff Snell said in a release from the district. “Mary exhibits empathy, intelligence and thoughtfulness in her role on the board. We all appreciate her commitment to service. Her legacy of educational leadership is truly extraordinary.”
The Camas School Board will seek applicants to fill the vacancy on the board, and the appointee will fill the District 5 position until the 2017 election cycle. The winner of that election will serve the remaining two years on Tipton’s four-year term.
