The man told firefighters his smoke alarm woke him up and he soon found the kitchen on fire, Stromberg said. He tried to put out the flames with an extinguisher, but that didn’t work so he evacuated, Stromberg said.

Twenty-one firefighters responded and brought the fire under control in about 15 minutes. Stromberg said the smoke alarm played an important role in making sure the resident got out safely.

Volunteers with the American Red Cross responded to assist the man. The Vancouver Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the fire.
