A motorist struck a man who was lying in the middle of East Mill Plain Boulevard before dawn on Friday. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Vancouver police closed Mill Plain westbound between Interstate 205 and Southeast 105th Avenue for several hours as they investigated what happened.

A motorist called 911 shortly before 4 a.m. to say he was driving west in the 10500 block of Mill Plain when he hit a dark object lying in the roadway, according to a press release from the Vancouver Police Department. He pulled over into the parking lot of a quick-lube store and realized he had hit a body.

Police responded and recovered the body of a man, later identified as Fabian G. Rosales, 37, of Vancouver.

According to preliminary reports, he was wearing dark clothing. It was also not immediately known whether the man died as a result of being struck and dragged by the vehicle, or whether he might have already been dead.

The victim’s body will be taken to the Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The driver remained on the scene and cooperated with police. Speed or impairment are not factors in the crash, the press release said.

Mill Plain was fully reopened by 9:30 a.m.

The Vancouver Police Department’s Traffic Unit is investigating.
